Dr. Eva Bleeker

EDD, BCC, MS, MA/MC, MA/CE

I wish I’d kept a tally of the number of times I’ve heard someone say, “I’ve never told anyone this before…” It’s amazing to see how many people are carrying a story they think cannot be heard. Maybe that’s you. Or maybe you want to learn to be a better listener to the stories of others. Either way, I’m glad you’re here.

I believe every person has the potential to engage in Story Work and then to become a healing witness to the stories of others.

The order of these things is critical, though, because when we try to witness the stories of others without feeling safely held in our own, we can experience secondary trauma or fall into unhelpful territory of fixing, downplaying, or otherwise devaluing the felt experiences of others.

In my own journey through brokenness and healing the Lord gave me some incredible listeners who helped me understand what I was learning about the redemptive aspects of Story Work. These days it is my sacred privilege to be able to share what I’m learning with others, because I believe there should be no gate-keeping in this practice.

The most critical component of Story Work is another person or group of people.

While it’s possible to start on this work with a handbook or journaling, the way we are built to heal is for someone else to witness the story. Whether telling or listening, our participation in the process literally changes the outcome for everyone involved.

If you are sensing a desire to look for God’s love and redemption in your story, I am excited to tell you that I have been working on some new offerings I hope to announce later this year, including a Story Companion cohort idea that is just beginning to take shape.

In the meantime, I encourage you to keep pursuing story work in whatever way Jesus leads you. You can get a jump on learning from the work I’m doing by clicking on the “Interviews and Media” tab on my resources page, or come see me at one of my upcoming events.

The right side has a destination addressed to 'Every person who has a story. (that includes you!)'. When Story Work is done well, God moves the furniture of our lives to the edges of the room until LOVE is at the center. It’s a beautiful thing to witness.
